PM Nabbanja assured Parliament and Ugandans on Thursday during Plenary that government is working closely with the International Organisation of Migration (IOM) to secure the release and repatriation of Ugandans held hostage by rebel groups in Myanmar.
Minister for foreign Affairs Hon. John Mulimba and NUP MP Muwada had raised concerns of stranded Ugandans in Myanmar, Egypt, India and United Arab Emirates. It is on record in bid to secure employment, more than 100,000 nationals are in foreign land. Though some are legally employed, most are victims of deceit by employment companies transporting labor abroad. Nabbanja has urged government to sensitise nationals on processes regards to authentic labor recruitment.
The Minister revealed 30 individuals have been recorded to be held at two rebel camps in Myanmar. Hon. Mulimba said, the Myanmar Foreign Affairs Minister understood to waive any fine and criminal charges and encouraged the two countries to create cooperation framework in Immigration and anti human trafficking. 60 nationals stack in Egypt and 200 in India, some stranded due to change in policy of stay and others especially female are victims of human trafficking.
Though Hon. Mulimba released the figures, Hon. Muwada believes the number of stranded Ugandans in foreign land surpass 450.
