Rafael Nadal beats a Russian 25-year-old Daniil Medvedev to clinch title in the Australian Open in the men’s singles whereas America’s Danielle Rose Collins couldn’t manage to pull-up a win against Australian’s Ashleigh Barty in her home ground in the Women’s singles all in tennis tournament held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia yesterday Sunday.
The tournament that ran from 9th-30th January 2022 is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
The 35-year-old Spanish professional tennis player is now ranked world No. 5 and has so far won 21 Grand Slam men’s singles titles, the most in history of the Uganda’s little-known sport.
Novak Djokovic through his social media accounts congratulated the two Australian Open singles winners, Ash Barty and Rafael Nadal, after being denied the chance to compete for the title. The Serbian was deported after losing a visa battle that centred on the fact that he is unvaccinated unlike some of our local artists who were deported from South Africa recently after failing to state a convincing reason to enter the country.
Former world number one Roger Federer, the third of “the big three”, also congratulated his “friend and great rival” in a social media post.
Nadal the winner of the men’s singles tournaments bagged $2,875,000 and his runner-up claimed $1,575,000. The men’s doubles winner Australian’s duo Kyrgios & Kokkinakis claimed $675,000.
Meanwhile Uganda has continuously declined in world tennis ranking for the recent period with Croatia leading.
