The 27th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference concluded yesterday the 6th of January without representation of United Kingdom and Canada. It’s ironic though that the mother State did not honor her representation and this disappointment created mixed reactions both from Ugandan and other leaders and scholars. However political analysts like Joseph Ochieno linked it to the recent anti-homosexuality bill which both United Kingdom and Canada claim it’s against international human rights law, and insecurity citing the recurring attacks by Allied Democratic Forces. The three day conference ended successfully with Speakers visiting several tourist sites including the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe. It is important to note that the Speakers and Presiding Officers’ Conference wasn’t political or in any way linked to Uganda’s politics though President Museveni advised them to take advantage of the population and common language as he gracefully welcomed the delegations.
Speaker Anita Among commended CSPOC on best legislative practices, urging them to focus on anchoring peace and ending global conflicts. The CommonWealth Speakers applauded CIPLA Quality Chemicals on its potentials to supply the African region with drugs procured from the West especially anti-viro HIV drugs and antimalarial drugs.
For Uganda, hosting the 27th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference was a blessing as several economic impact is expected in the near future.
