Uganda’s athletic duo Jacob Kiplimo and his elder colleague Joshua Cheptegei were among the medalist this morning in Australian town of Bathrust.
The 22 year old long distance runner Kiplimo clocked 29:17 mins to win a gold medal for Senior Men World Cross Championship that started at 10:30am.
“The course was really good, even with lots of wind, it was really intense,” said Kiplimo.
His running mate Joseph Cheptegei came third with a bronze after Ethiopian Aregawi who came second.
“The course was challenging… and I think I was not so much prepared, but to come here and be on the podium, I can be grateful,” said Cheptegei.
In a bizarre scene top women’s star Letesenbet Gidey dramatically collapsed in sight of thousands a stone throw away the finish line as she looked destined for the golden medal.
Gidey was illegally helped to her feet and stumbled over the finish line, but was disqualified.
Kenya won the mixed relay, where two women and two men each run a 2km loop, in 23.14 — seven seconds ahead of Ethiopia to avenge their defeat by the fellow African powerhouse in Denmark. Australia came third.
Uganda has over the years simultaneously build good long-distance runners posing abig threat to the Eastern Counterpart Kenya and Ethiopia who has dominated the game for quite a while.
