In Feb 2021, Dominic Ongwen was charged with 61 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes allegedly committed after 1st July 2002 in Northern Uganda. He was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment with a deduction of time spent in detention between January 2015 to May 2021.
On 21st July and August, the defense filed it’s appeal briefs against the conviction and the sentence, respectively. The appeal was made on grounds that the accused was a child soldier forced into the Lord Resistance Army.The Appeal Chamber held a hearing on 14-18 February 2022 and observations by the parties and participants on these appeal. On 15 December 2022, the Appeal chamber Unanimously denied Mr. Dominic Ogwen appeal hence he continues to serve his sentence.
Meanwhile, search is ongoing for the fugitive leader of the Lord Resistance Army Joseph Kony through out Africa. It was earlier rumoured and alleged that he was dead and others claimed was in hiding in Central Republic of Africa, DR Congo though no trace of him has been found.
